About this piece
I carved this on a dark evening early in October while my friends were attending a football game. I'm grateful I had this as an excuse not to go. I haven't done any exposed carvings since this one because I love the freedom of making layered jack'o'lanterns, but I plan to make one or two more in 2026.
Carving notes
An exposed carving with such thin dangling lines as these is unlikely to last more than 24 hours.
Carving tips
- If you want trick'or'treaters to see this jack'o'lantern, carve it the day of Halloween because the thin strips of remaining pumpkin are unlikely to last long before they shrivel up.
- When carving thin strips with a hand saw, you are less likely to break them if you use a fast sawing motion with very little pressure. If possible, use your other hand to support the opposite side of where you are sawing to provide stability.
